Step 1: You ask the following persons if they would sign; the local chief of police, the local sheriff, the local district (prosecuting) attorney, the chief of the state police, and the state Attorney General. The CLEO can delegate the signing duty, for his convenience. Insist they refuse in writing, if that is what they will do. You may be surprised, one might sign. Assume they all refuse. That list of persons comes from 27 CFR sec. 179.85, which is the regulation that created the law enforcement certification requirement for Form 4′s. 27 CFR sec. 179.63 is the companion regulation for Form 1’s. It is NOT in any statute passed by Congress. Although not listed, and ATF will NOT designate federal officials as also acceptable (see below) other persons whose certification has been acceptable in the recent past include; local U.S. Attorney’s, local federal judges, local U.S. Marshals, and local F.B.I. agents. Other local federal law enforcement agents might also work, like DEA or ATF (imagine accepting their own certification!) or Secret Service. The federal law enforcement agents should probably be in a supervisory capacity, like the head of the field office or similar post.

NFA Branch desires that folks who install sears into guns where the sear is not very accessible, HK guns in particular, tell them the make, model and serial number of the gun into which the sear is installed. This makes it easier on them, as they do not have to open the gun up to see the sear, if they know that gun is the one with the sear in it. This is called “marrying” the sear to the gun. It is especially useful when the host semi-auto has been modified so as to make it potentially illegal without the sear, like putting a shoulder stock on an H&K SP-89 pistol, or cutting the barrel of an HK-94 to less than 16 inches. You may “divorce” the two, but don’t if the host gun will end up an unregistered short barreled rifle, or other unregistered NFA weapon. Often this marriage info is in box 4(h) on the Form 4, so anyone who looks at the paperwork can see the sear is in that gun; local law enforcement, for instance.

AmeriGlo

AmeriGlo Independent Light (www.ameriglo.com) was kind enough to send a sample of their “Operator” 3 dot green/yellow tritium night sights for review. At my request AmeriGlo supplied sights for a Glock, and I installed them on my Glock 19. The sights install exactly as would Glock sights. (Glock, in fact, offers similar Trijicon night sights on new pistols.) AmeriGlo night sights are powered by Trijicon tritium tubes, and so marked. In the words of AmeriGlo’s Rick Callihan, “We make the metal here in Georgia, then send it to Trijicon where the tritium is installed. Trijicon sends it back to us and we then distribute the finished product.” Those who haven’t seen tritium sights at night but are old enough to remember radium numbers on wrist watches can visualize approximately how three dot tritium night sights look in the dark. AmeriGlo’s Trijicon front and rear sights use a tiny, sealed, glass vial of tritium with a guaranteed life of 12 years to produce the glow. A sapphire lens distributes the glow from the tritium for best visibility at night. The front sight’s tritium insert is larger than the inserts in the rear sight to increase its visibility. To protect the glass vial containing the pressurized tritium gas, the glass container is silicon rubber cushioned in an aluminum tube. There is a white ring at the visible end of the front sight to catch the eye in daylight, and in daylight these flat top Patridge type sights are aligned normally. The most popular Operator set, and the one sent to me for review, uses a green tritium insert in the front sight and yellow tritium inserts in the rear sight to aid alignment and avoid confusion in the dark. Green/green Operator sights are also available. The sight picture at night is three softly glowing dots, which are aligned in a row (green flanked on each side by yellow) on the target. Bang! The target is neutralized. At least that is how it is supposed to work. Fortunately, I have not had to try it for real, but the system works fine in practice sessions. AmeriGlo sights are available online or through AmeriGlo dealers.

A lost or stolen NFA firearm
A lost or stolen NFA firearm can be a real problem. It can be a very expensive loss, as well as endangering the continued lawfulness of owning NFA firearms, both at a state and federal level. Contrary to what you might hear, NFA firearms, machine guns and silencers in particular, are very rare in crime. A significant source of such weapons in crime is stolen NFA firearms, from law enforcement, the military and civilian collectors. A crime spree with a stolen NFA firearm can lead to restrictive state or local legislation, as well as local law enforcement refusing to continue providing the law enforcement certification needed for transfers to individuals. Safeguarding NFA firearms is not required, but seems to me to be extremely prudent, both to preserve the firearm, as well as its continued legal ownership. Reporting the theft of an NFA weapon to law enforcement is the only way to even have a chance at recovering the gun, and preventing its use (or further use) in crime. I think reporting its theft is a good idea. Below is what is required, as opposed to what is a good idea.

Sniper Jacket Our Same High Quality Jute Thread is sewn directly on to a Military BDU 4 pocket coat. These are made by ATLANCO. The sewn on Jute thread covers the entire Back of the jacket, tops of the arms, and shoulders. The Hood is attached, and thumb loops are sewn into the cuff of the sleeves for crawling.
The Front Chest area and the forearms have a 1000 Denier Cordura Plus material sewn on for those long Sniper crawls. The Cordura Plus means it has a Urethane Coating for water repellency. The Hood is build the same way we build our Ghillie Poncho by hand tying the Jute thread to a 1×1 netting, and then sewing this to the Jacket. This design keeps you cooler, allowing the wind to pass through, and also allows for better hearing. All the buttons on the chest have been removed, and Velcro has been sewn on to secure the jacket closed. This makes your crawl more comfortable with out feeling the buttons. ( Weight 6 lbs.)
